Globe
Similar to many cities in Arizona, Globe has its roots and name tied to a mine, the Globe Mine. It was originally called Globe City but in 1878 the word city was dropped from the name. There are many legends about the naming of the town, including silver bullets used by Apaches, a perfectly rounded boulder in the shape of a globe and a silver ball with markings “like the outline of the earth.” The silver ball, deemed “Munson’s Chunk” was real, but it was discovered after the name Globe had already been chosen.
A Coconino Sun article from 1921 recounts the naming of Slinkard Springs with roots to Globe. It was named after Frank Slinkard, a robber that had stolen from a Chinese merchant near Globe in 1899. Slinkard was an outlaw who lived in the area in the 1890s and multiple accounts confirm the story of his robbery of the Chinese merchant.
