The Arizona City-Sun made its debut in July 1960 as the first newspaper focusing exclusively on Arizona City, a newly established town in Pinal County just south of Casa Grande. The publication was created by the Arizona City Development Corporation to “keep readers reliably informed on developments in Arizona City; to report news of interest concerning the State of Arizona; [and] to publish general features that will prove interesting to readers.” Content included updates from the Arizona Public Service Company about utilities being incorporated, news from Phoenix, Tucson, and Casa Grande, as well as advertisements for model homes to attract potential new residents to the area. A small humor column “A. Barrel Cactus Is A Stickler for Fun” was a regular feature in the paper, including short quips and sardonic observations about politics and life in general.
