Arizona Singles Scene

The Arizona Singles Scene began as an information source to promote local singles events, as well as information for people experiencing divorce. Its founder, Harlan Jacobsen, had been recently divorced when he noticed that most major newspaper outlets would not take any advertising with the words “singles” or “divorce.” Jacobsen decided to undertake creating his own publication as a resource, the Arizona Singles Scene, for the single community in Phoenix, and a section for Tucson was quickly added. The paper also featured personal ads, as well as advice columns for single life as well as dating. In the 1980s, Jacobsen pursued legal action against the City of Scottsdale for allegedly removing his publication from newspaper racks, but the publication continued. The first issue is from 1972 and ran twice-monthly, eventually shortening until it ceased publication in 2004.
