Nelson's Pool
The Nelson's Pool collection includes oral history interviews, photographs, and ephemera relating to Nelson's Sandy Beach, and later, Nelson's Pool, a family-owned and operated public swimming pool in Central Phoenix. Built and operated by George Nelson beginning in 1931, and later by his children until it closed in 1976, this family owned business helped to support three generations of George’s family, provided free swim lessons for local children, and served as a community hub.
Other items in the collection include incomplete scripts of the popular annual water shows hosted at the pool which featured clown diving, water ballet, and water safety demonstrations. Video footage of the swimming pool itself which was designed as a "draw and fill" pool that used a unique method to circulate well water which kept the temperature cold and required less chlorine. Oral history interviews provide detailed information on the pool’s architecture, the structure and content of the annual water ballet shows, and the community that grew up around this oasis in the desert.
