Arizona Joint House Resolution 1 determined that these funds could be used for "suitable furnishings and interior adornment of the state capitol." Lon Megargee sent this small proof (a sketch of a larger painting) to the newly formed Arizona State Capitol, hoping to earn a commission. The first Governor of the new State of Arizona, George Hunt, supported Megargee and eventually the State of Arizona commissioned Megargee to paint 15 paintings for the Arizona State Capitol.
