The painting depicts the scale of the canyon by showing a single man looking over one small area. Megargee based himself in Williams, Arizona until the painting was finished. The original painting was rejected; the current painting on display is Megargee's revised submission. The Grand Canyon would not become a National Park until 1919 (at the time of this painting it was only a Forest Reserve), but it was already a well-known destination for tourists. The Havasupai Tribe Reservation was established inside the Grand Canyon 1880, long before Megargee completed this painting.
