Through his network of trading posts in the Four Corners area he became a powerful and respected figure among the surrounding Indian nations. While Sheriff of Apache County he kept the peace, ending a three-year old range war. At all times he was a humanitarian, helping white and Indian alike through drought, famine and epidemic. (Hubbell died in 1930 not 1903.)
