Excerpt from the book: "The Presbyterian Church in our Presbytery begins with the coming of Rev. Charles H. Cook to Sacaton, December 22, 1870, as missionary to the Pima Indians. Mr. Cook was sent by the Methodists Board, and remained with them until 1881, when by the Board of Home Missions of our church, and labored in the Pima area for almost fifty years. The first minister to the English speaking people of our church was Rev. John Merrill, who organized a church in Prescott, in 1876, which later affiliated with the Congregationalists. The Presbytery of Arizona was formed November 13, 1880, at Phoenix, to be a part of New Mexico Synod, then newly organized. In 1912, the Synod of Arizona was organized with the Presbyteries of Northern Arizona, Phoenix, and Southern Arizona."SubjectPresbyterian Church in the U.S.A.
