Historical Note: On December 10, 1927, the Phoenix Union High School's (PUHS) new (not quite completed) brick stadium was dedicated. On that same day the stadium's inaugural game pitted the PUHS Coyotes against the San Diego High School Hilltoppers. The Coyotes won 7-0. Besides football, Montgomery Stadium also hosted the pageant, "Masque of the Yellow Moon." The production began in the 1920s and was presented until 1954. As new high schools were added to the system, they participated until at one time more than 2,000 students performed before capacity crowds in the stadium. Another non-football event, The Phoenix Union Follies, was first presented in 1928 and continued annually until 1953. Approximately 10,000 students participated in these performances.
